What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) is a famous film story of pure heart, testing the bonds of family, friend- and relationships, and showing the importance of understanding the struggles in life. This blog series is a play on that, allowing HFHP members to share what has been eating their mind, body and soul.

The first couple of blogs have been from Marinke van Riet or in short MVR in her role as HFHP’s first Chief Weaver/Director. But this time Amalia Hammarlund from the EU Food Policy Coalition does the honours! Amalia shares the importance in making your voice heard in the consultation for a new EU Legislative Framework for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS Law) by the end of 2023.

In its Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy, published in May 2020, the European Commission (EC) announced it will put a proposal for a new Legislative Framework for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS Law) by the end of 2023. This will be a crucial new piece of European Union (EU) legislation on food, which could support advancement towards a sustainability-focused food system transformation. This new SFS law has the potential to drive the progressive adaptation of other food-related EU laws (e.g. the Common Agricultural Policy) and could also break new ground for the EU on other aspects of the food system, potentially leading to stronger EU action in areas such as food consumption and diets, sustainability obligations for food supply chain actors, as well as enhanced transparency and stronger social and environmental safeguards in seafood and agri-food trade.

Is your work or engagement related to food systems, such as food production or diets? Then this new law should be on your radar, as it has a true potential to boost the transition towards more sustainable food systems. To make it a reality, we need to send the European Commission a clear message!

The European Commission public consultation on the SFS Law opened on 28 of April 2022 and will close on 21 of July 2022. The public consultation takes form of an online questionnaire on the Have your say portal.

The EU Food Policy Coalition is here to support you!  We bring together civil society and organisations working towards refining and advocating for a shared vision of sustainable food systems at the EU level. We coordinate NGOs from a broad spectrum working on food systems, grassroots social movements, farmers organisations, organisations of fishers, trade unions, think tanks, scientific and research groups.

For the purposes of this consultation, we have put together a page with resources in various languages. Also contact me, if you like to be part of our social media action via A.Hammarlund@foodpolicycoalition.eu

Upwards and onwards!
